Historical Perspective of PSN
The Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN) is the umbrella body of all registered Pharmacists in Nigeria. The PSN was founded in 1927, and that makes it one of the oldest professional associations in Nigeria .
Membership of PSN is open to all registered Pharmacists in Nigeria .
The Period 1927 to 1947 saw a rapid development in Pharmacy training, Legislation and Professional Organization in Nigeria . In 1947, Mr. T.K. E. Phillips was elected the first President of PSN, and was succeeded by Mr. Peter Etim Archibong in 1954. In 1961 the Nigerian Journal of Pharmacy was launched with Chief Andrew Egboh as the first Editor-In-Chief.
1969 marked the beginning of the Award of the Fellowship of Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria, FPSN, with the Fellowship Award on Chief A. O. Ransome Kuti, the then President of PSN. In a series of responses to International Pharmacy Development, PSN became a foundation member of the Commonwealth Pharmaceutical Association, CPA, in 1969 and a member of the International Pharmaceutical Federation, FIP, in 1973. The PSN was also a leading foundation member of the West Africa Pharmaceutical Federation (WAPF), now West Africa Postgraduate College of Pharmacists (WAPCP), in 1976.
In 1990, a member of PSN, Prof. E.O. Ogunlana, FPSN, became the first African to win the prestigious FIP Andrea Beidat Award. He later became the President of PSN in 1994 a Post he held till 1997, when the PSN had her first Female President, and currently a distinguished Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,in the person of Lady Eme Ufot Ekaette, FPSN. In 2001, PSN acquired her first building and National Secretariat, the Pharmacy House, at 32, Faramobi Ajike Street , Anthony Village , Lagos . In 2002, the PSN organized its first ever, Special Pharmacists Summit, to discuss problems facing the profession in Nigeria and to evolve strategies for their resolution.
